A tradition of night
baseball games continues at Guv Fuller Field in
Falmouth thanks to a cooperative effort by
The Yawkey Foundations, the
Town of Falmouth and the
Falmouth Commodores.
The lighting at
Fuller Field was inefficient and becoming
difficult to repair because of its age and
condition. There was a concern that the wooden
poles were deteriorating at their bases and that
they could be unsafe in strong winds.
Chuck Sturtevant,
the former General Manager and Treasurer of the
Commodores, initiated the process of replacing
the lights by applying for a $150,000 grant from
The Yawkey Foundations which was awarded in
2006.
The Falmouth
Commodores contributed $25,000 to the project
and Falmouth Babe Ruth Baseball donated $5000.
As fund raising
progressed, the original cost estimates
increased due to the prices of steel and copper
rising beyond expectations. These increases
necessitated applying to the Town of Falmouth’s
Community Preservation Committee (CPC) twice for
funds to complete the project.
The CPC approved
both requests for a total of $335,000. However,
the funds were not available until after the
Commodores’ 2007 season had started.
Construction began in August and was completed
in time for the Falmouth High School football
team to be the first group to enjoy the benefits
of the new lighting.
Brian Dale and the
Falmouth DPW were integral to this effort as was
Helen Kennedy and the Falmouth Recreation
Department. Bob Clark, Assistant GM of the
Falmouth Commodores, worked with Chuck
Sturtevant on the project and Musco Lighting
supplied the lights and poles.
The new lights at
Guv Fuller Field will benefit the entire
community of Falmouth. And, because the Cape
Cod Baseball League showcases talent from across
the country, this effort benefits national
college baseball as well.
The Commodores
intend to inaugurate their 2008 season with
special recognition of the parties involved in
this important endeavor.
